GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  This MARADMIN solicits applicants for Class 26 of the Mike Mansfield Fellowship Program.
2.  The Mike Mansfield Fellowship Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1994 to build a corps of U.S. federal government employees with proficiency in the Japanese language and practical, firsthand knowledge about Japan and its government.  If selected, the candidate will be placed in Japan’s Ministry of Internal-affairs and Communications (MIC) for the duration of the fellowship.
3.  Marines selected for assignment to the Mansfield Fellowship will attend a seven week course of intensive Japanese Language study which, includes a homestay, cultural activities, and professional site visits.  Upon completion of the Japanese language course, they will move to Tokyo for a ten-month assignment working full-time with Japanese colleagues on issues relevant to professional expertise.  Upon completion of the fellowship assignment, Marines will serve a minimum of 24 months in a Marine Corps spectrum management or communications related billet in Japan.  Marines will be administratively assigned to Monitored Command Code 093 (Camp Fuji) during the fellowship.  Marines are encouraged to review all requirements for applying for the fellowship at https:(slash)(slash)mansfieldfellows.org.
4.  Selection criteria:
4.a.  Marines applying for this program must be hard working, self-reliant, self-disciplined, flexible, and sociable.  They must be fully dedicated to the program and be able to cope with the challenges of living and working with those from a different culture.
4.b.  Perspective candidates will understand the following:
4.b.1.  Understand that this is a full-time program.
4.b.2.  Recognize that this program is not an independent project but aligned to the objectives of the Mansfield Fellowship Program.
4.b.3.  Know what they want to accomplish in the program, but also flexible to new possibilities once working as a fellow.
4.b.4.  Have an interest in broadening their knowledge about Japan.
4.b.5.  Have a clear understanding of how they will implement knowledge gained during the program when they return to their Fleet Marine Force or Supporting Establishment unit.  Additionally, possess the initiative and patience to work toward this goal.
4.b.6.  Be willing to participate in group activities and support the program’s larger goals and objectives.
4.b.7.  Work collaboratively with other fellows and the Mansfield Foundation offices in Washington, D.C., Missoula, MT, and Tokyo, Japan.

5.b.  0629 – Transmissions Chief, SSgt-GySgt.
5.c.  0699 – Communications Chief (with AMOS 0648), MSgt.
6.  Nomination packages will include:
6.a.  Rank, Name, Current billet assignment, MOS and Time in Service.
6.b.  Overview of professional and governmental experience (e.g. professional Marine Corps bio).
6.c.  Japan or foreign culture experiences.
6.d.  Complete the following essay in 300 words or less:  What are your major strengths and qualifications for the Mansfield Fellowship Program?
6.e.  Letter of recommendation (no more than two).
6.f.  Commanding general endorsement.

7.c.  June 1, 2020 – Mansfield Fellowship Program Class 26 recruitment begins.
7.d.  October 25, 2020 – Application deadline.
7.e.  Early November 2020 - Invitations to candidates selected for interviews.
7.f.  November 12-13, 2020 - In-person interviews in the Washington, D.C. office (attendance mandatory).
7.g.  November 16-18, 2020 - Candidates notified of selection or non-selection.
7.h.  February 22-26, 2021 - Orientation and placement negotiations with Japanese government representatives (attendance mandatory; dates subject to change).
7.i.  July 1, 2021 - Program begins.
7.j.  June 30, 2022 - Program ends.
