GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  The rapid pace of technology advancement and the demands of great power competition require highly trained enlisted leaders.  With these demands, the force must maximize Primary Military Occupational Specialty (PMOS) progression training opportunities provided by formal schools.  This MARADMIN clarifies the 06XX PMOS requirement for promotion to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and provides guidance regarding Chief Course attendance for Marines to attain the PMOS’ of 0629, 0639, or 0679 identified in reference (a). This is a DC, M&RA (MP/MM) and DC, I (IC4) coordinated message.
2.  Marines with the PMOS’ of 0621, 0627, 0631, or 0671 selected to the rank of Staff Sergeant are eligible to attend their respective chief course.  In accordance with reference (a), Marines must attend their respective chief course to attain the applicable 06X9 PMOS.  Upon selection to the rank of Staff Sergeant, selectees will work with their commands to attend their formal chief course at first opportunity.  Marines otherwise eligible for promotion to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant that do not have the applicable 06X9 PMOS or have not been assigned the 06X9A IMOS will not be included with the promotion board population.
3.  Due to school seat availability and to ensure promotions remain stable within the 06XX occupational field, a grace period prior to 1 October 2021 is established before enforcement of the promotion requirement.   Marines promoted to Staff Sergeant prior to 1 October 2021 are encouraged to attend their respective 06X9 course, but are not required in order to obtain the 06X9 PMOS.  This MARADMIN is the authority to award Marines with a date of rank prior to 1 October 2021 the 06X9 PMOS.  Integration Branch, Manpower Management Division will execute and complete PMOS reporting to 06X9 no earlier than 1 September 2021 and no later than 1 October 2021 to fully capture the population of Marines identified herein.
4.  Marines completing special duty assignments should be considered for the course as a priority.  Whenever practical, Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Temporary Duty Under Instruction (TEMINS) en route directing them to attend their respective chief course should be considered if a school seat is available from the gaining command, and delayed staffing is authorized by the gaining command.
5.  Marines with 24 or more months of time in grade as a Staff Sergeant, who have not completed the applicable 06X9 chief course, will require a Commanding General endorsed waiver for further retention.
6.  This MARADMIN is applicable to the active component only.
7.  Release authorized by BGen Williamson, A.T., Director, Manpower Plans and Policy Division, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.//
