GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. I COMMEND EACH OF YOU FOR YOUR UNRELENTING
EFFORTS TO KEEP EACH OTHER SAFE DURING SUCH DEMANDING TIMES.
ACHIEVING OUR SAFETY GOALS CONTINUES TO BE CHALLENGING AND I NEED
YOUR CONTINUED VIGILANCE IN ALL AREAS TO REDUCE PREVENTABLE MISHAPS
WITH THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF ZERO.
2. A YEAR TO DATE RECAP SHOWS WE'VE ALREADY FALLEN SHORT OF OUR
GOAL FOR GROUND OPERATIONAL SAFETY. ADDITIONALLY, MEETING OUR
NON-OPERATIONAL AND AVIATION GOALS WILL BE CHALLENGING.
SPECIFICALLY, WE HAVE HAD 15 CLASS A MISHAPS IN GROUND OPERATIONAL
SAFETY WITH A TARGET OF TEN OR LESS FOR THE YEAR. WE'VE HAD 23
OFF-DUTY CLASS A MISHAPS WITH A TARGET OF 32 OR LESS. LASTLY, OUR
AVIATION CLASS A MISHAPS STAND AT 3 WITH A TARGET OF 7 OR LESS.
3. AT HEADQUARTERS, WE USE MISHAP NUMBERS AND RATES TO GAUGE OUR
SUCCESS AT MISHAP REDUCTION. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT JUST ABOUT
REDUCING MISHAP NUMBERS AND RATES. IT IS ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND
TAKING CARE OF EACH OTHER AS MARINES. IT IS ALSO ABOUT OUR ABILITY
TO SUSTAIN COMBAT READINESS AND PERFORM AT MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS.
BY FAR, OUR GREATEST CHALLENGE IS PREVENTING VEHICLE MISHAPS BOTH
ON- AND OFF-DUTY. WE ALL HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO BECOME ACTIVELY
ENGAGED IN STOPPING THE RECKLESS AND THOUGHTLESS BEHAVIOR THAT LEADS
TO MISHAPS. WE NEED TO TAKE CHARGE AND ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR
MANAGING RISK AND PREVENTING FUTURE MISHAPS.
