Air Operations in Afghanistan

Close-Air Support

Lashkar Gah
Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews observed enemy forces setting up improvised explosive devices and released a precision-guided munition against the enemy position. They followed up with a strafing run to eliminate the threat to friendly forces. On-scene joint terminal attack controllers declared the action successful.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly convoy that encountered an improvised explosive device. The pilots conducted shows of force, with numerous flares, in order to deter enemy small arms fire in the vicinity of the convoy. Ground controllers declared the shows of force successful when enemy fire ceased and contact with enemy forces was broken.

Asadabad
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews released precision-guided munitions to deter enemy forces. All actions were declared successful by ground controllers.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. After arriving on station, the aircrews observed enemy forces firing against friendly ground forces. They released precision-guided munitions against the enemy position and eliminated a threat to the friendly forces. Ground controllers confirmed the strikes successful.

Sheykhabad
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity after friendly forces reported taking enemy sniper fire. Ground controllers declared the action successful when enemy fire ceased.

Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy. When friendly forces reported taking enemy fire, the aircrews conducted a show of force to deter enemy aggression. When no further enemy action was noted, ground controllers confirmed the action as successful.

Kandahar

Qal-E-Naw
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy. The aircrews conducted shows of presence when a probable attack on friendly forces was reported. Ground controllers declared the shows of presence successful.

Monari
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan forces activity. Ground controllers determined the show of force was successful.

Farah
Coalition pilots and F/A-18E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. While coalition pilots conducted a show of presence to deter enemy action, the Navy aircrews conducted shows of force, with flares expended, to deter anti-Afghan forces activity. Ground controllers reported all actions successful.

Bagram
F15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted shows of force and a show of presence to deter enemy activity. Ground controllers determined the actions were successful.

Morghab
