GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  APRIL IS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH (SAAM). THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE APPROVED THE FOLLOWING THEME FOR SAAM 2014: "LIVE OUR VALUES: STEP UP TO STOP SEXUAL ASSAULT. THE THEME REASSERTS THAT IT IS EVERY MARINES RESPONSIBILITY TO STEP UP TO PREVENT SEXUAL ASSAULT.
2.  IN THE LAST YEAR, THE MARINE CORPS HAS MADE GREAT STRIDES IN OUR EFFORTS TO ERADICATE SEXUAL ASSAULT FROM OUR RANKS. MARINES RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF STANDING IN THE GAP AND ACTING AS THEIR BROTHERS AND SISTERS KEEPER. INDIVIDUAL MARINES HAVE INITIATED CAMPAIGNS, DEVELOPED PREVENTION POSTERS, AND TAKEN ACTION TO PERSONALLY DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO PREVENT SEXUAL ASSAULT FROM OCCURRING. LEADERS ARE ALSO WORKING DILLIGENTLY TO EDUCATE THEIR MARINES AND TO SET CLIMATES THAT ARE NON-PERMISSIVE OF MISCONDUCT IN GENERAL AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN PARTICULAR. WE MUST CONTINUE OUR MOMENTUM, FIGHTING THE CANCER FROM WITHIN. TO DO THIS, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT EVERY MARINE OWN THIS FIGHT, LIVE UP TO OUR VALUES OF HONOR, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT, AND STEP UP TO STOP SEXUAL ASSAULT.
3.  THE MARINE CORPS REMAINS COMMITTED TO REDUCING, WITH THE GOAL OF ELIMINATING, SEXUAL ASSAULT WITHIN OUR RANKS. COMMANDERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SHOW THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION AND RESPONSE PROGRAM BY SUPPORTING LOCALLY SCHEDULED EVENTS IN APRIL, AND ALSO THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
