Marine administrative message 616/14 announces the 2014 Colonel Justice Marion “Jumping Joe” Chambers Award selection criteria and solicits nominations of eligible Reserve company grade officers. The award is presented annually in memory of Col. Chambers, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, to recognize officers who best demonstrate the outstanding leadership qualities exemplified by Chambers during World War II.

Chambers received the Medal of Honor for his actions as commander of Assault Landing Team, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division at Iwo Jima.

Officers within the Marine Forces Reserve are eligible for the award.

A board of senior field grade officers will convene to review nominations.

Nominees must exemplify outstanding leadership recognized by seniors and subordinates, exhibit leadership qualities that contribute to the development of esprit de corps and loyalty within their units, set professional and personal standards that others seek to emulate, and clearly demonstrate the ideals of courage, resourcefulness, perseverance and concern for the well-being of their fellow Marines.

Previous Chambers Award recipients and officers who have the primary occupational fields 25XX, 28XX, 59XX, 72XX and 75XX are not eligible for nomination. Nominations may be submitted posthumously for an officer who meets all eligibility and awards criteria.
