The Marine Corps Community Services hosted the Month of the Military Child Children’s Fair at Joint Base Myers-Henderson Hall, Virginia, April 16, 2016.

The 9th annual fair celebrated children of military parents and their unique struggles and resilience.

Month of the Military child was established in 1986 by then Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger. The purpose was to show respect and appreciation for the constant moves and long deployments that not only the parents endure, but their children as well.

“It’s a great way for families to obviously get out and have a good time,” said Alice Stauffer, the Behavior Health Branch Manager at Henderson Hall.

Various activities for children took place on throughout the day.

David Dixon, the author of ‘Goodnight Marines’, was present for a book signing. The children’s book was published as a way to introduce military kids to Marine Corps traditions in a way they could understand.

In addition Craft tables were set up along with face painting, and a movie was shown.

“The most important thing to take away from this is that when families leave here they were wowed and they say, ‘That was an awesome and memorable event that the MCCS at Henderson hall put on.’” said Doriann Geller, the Marketing Branch Officer Marine Corps Community Services at Henderson Hall.

During the fair, the children and parents were not only able to enjoy themselves but also saw that they are valued part of the military community.
