4 May 2009 | Alan Marsh

On Feb. 11, 1943, the 380th Fighter Squadron activated at Hamilton Field, California. The unit moved to Keevil, England in December and acquired F-6s and camera equipped P-51s. The squadron flew reconnaissance missions over Europe, attacked targets, and escorted bombers. The unit also escorted troop carriers and gliders during the invasion of Normandy and attacked enemy positions. The squadron was redesignated the 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in 1944, equipped with FP-80 aircraft. The unit inactivated April 1949 but was reactivated September 1950 and redesignated the 16th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (Night Photographic). Participation in missions over Vietnam earned the squadron three Presidential Unit Citations and ten campaign streamers. The squadron, redesignated the 16th Airborne Command and Control Squadron in 1996, continues to add to its proud tradition and combat history.
