Meritorious promotion: A cut above the rest

To be evaluated by a board of your superiors on knowledge, drill, physical fitness and military appearance is no easy task, but the opportunity for accelerated advancement to the next level of leadership is well worth the ordeal for those who are willing to endure the test. What I've learned: Cpl. Aaron Medina

Medina knew from his sophomore year in high school that he wanted to join the Marine Corps. Many members of his family, including his stepfather, served in the United States Navy. He is the first generation of his family to serve in the Marine Corps. He enlisted September 7, 2010.  It’s been a pretty cool experience serving in the Marine Corps; I

1st LEB conducts security classes alongside K-9 Division during ITX

The Provost Marshal’s Office K-9 Division conducted a class on vehicle searches for members of Marine Wing Support Squadron 374, July 25, 2014. The Engineer Company of MWSS 374 has been receiving classes on various forms of flight line security from 1st Law Enforcement Battalion to better prepare air stations for security while deployed.

All hands aboard the Combat Center gathered at Lance Cpl. Torrey L. Gray field to witness a historic moment in Combat Center history as Maj. Gen. David H. Berger, former Combat Center Commanding General, formally relinquished his command to Maj. Gen. Lewis A. Craparotta, Combat Center Commanding General, in a change of command ceremony, July 10, 2014.

Louisiana native serves as Marine infantryman, chaplain assistant

Lance Cpl. Paul Martinez, MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif.

Cpl. Christian D. Martinez is a rifleman with 7th Marine Regiment. His former battalion was, the now deactivated, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 7th Marine Regiment, where he deployed twice with the unit’s sniper platoon.

I Am Second movement visits the Combat Center

The crowd’s heads bow as the guest speaker leads a prayer. He speaks upon the Bible, religion and how he came to faith while he served as a Navy SEAL. Chief Petty Officer Remi Adeleke, reservist, SEAL Team 17, gave a testimonial for the "I Am Second" movement at the Combat Center’s Protestant Chapel, May 21, 2014.

Mixed-martial arts fights heat up Combat Center

Lance Cpl. Paul S. Martinez, MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif.

Fighters entered the cage as equals, but would leave as one winner and one loser. A crowd of several hundred Marines, sailors and family members watched as the fighters touched gloves, and almost immediately, the faster of the two seized the opportunity to strike, beating down his opponent as the crowd roared. His arm was held high by the announcer as he is declared the victor. The next pair of fighters prepare for their bout, declaring Summer Fight Night had returned in full swing.

What I've learned: Van Nguyen

Van Nguyen was an avid motorcycle cross rider as a teenager. Years after his retirement from the Marine Corps, he and his friends make an annual trip called a “man-cation” to engage in off-road riding.

‘Phantoms’ welcome new commanding officer

The winds of change could be felt sweeping across a formation of Marines with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 3. Before their eyes, they witnessed the induction of a new commanding officer and the commencement of a new location to continue their operations, but their mission of maintaining a combat-ready, expeditionary aviation force capable of swift deployment to the Marine Air Ground Task Force fleet, remained the same.

Memorial honors life, career of Col. M.J. ‘Mac’ Dube

The church was still as those who filled its pews prayed. The memories and thoughts that were shared through the words of friends and family members soothed the feeling of loss, which weighed heavily in the room. The congregation gathered to mourn the loss of an honorable Marine and beloved member of the Twentynine Palms community. Retired Marine Col. M.J. ‘Mac’ Dube, 80, passed away, April 29.
