Soldiers with Western Army Infantry Regiment, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, observe naval gunfire from the USS Spruance (DDG-111) during a supporting arms coordination center exercise (SACCEX) at San Clemente Island, Feb. 22, 2016, as part of Exercise Iron Fist 2016. SACCEX serves as a cooperative learning tool for the US-Japan partnership through the operation of supporting arms coordination center, which has developed the USMC and JGSDF’s ability to intergrate naval gunfire, mortars and close-air support as a combined force.
