Task force sailing after tearful goodbyes

After a six-day delay for repairs, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed more than 1,200 Marines and sailors aboard the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard here Sept. 24.

The MEU, a quick-reaction task force, consists of 2,200 Marines and sailors deployed aboard three ships. The Navy and Marine Corps team makes up the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group.

USS Cleveland and USS Rushmore, the other two ships, sailed Sept. 18 from San Diego with the bulk of the MEU’s ground combat and combat logistics elements.

After pierside goodbyes to friends and family members, the service members left San Diego Bay and sailed westward.

USS Bonhomme Richard will join Cleveland and Rushmore for missions in the Western Pacific and elsewhere.
