Marine officer visits kindergarteners

Weeks home from a seven-month deployment, Maj. John Hackel donned body armor and tactical gear and spoke to kindergartners.

The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s staff judge advocate told stories, took questions and showed photos to 13 Discovery Isle Child Development students May 28 with son Nathan in attendance.

The children sat still as Hackel talked about his deployment to the Western Pacific and the Middle East and about his time at sea aboard USS Bonhomme Richard.

“I think the children enjoyed this very much,” said Hackel, who while deployed received numerous handcrafted letters from the class. “This is just a little payback for them because they were very supportive during the deployment.”

Hackel displayed armor and gear on tables and the students were given permission to see each piece of gear and try it on.

“It was a very educational visit,” said teacher Queenie Baylon. “Overall, it was outstanding. It was an amazing hands-on learning experience for the children. I totally appreciated it.”

The children, showing their own appreciation after the presentation, surprised Hackel with a classroom hug.
