Marines from the Camp Lejeune-based 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit will host a community outreach event on Oct. 3, at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds in Columbus, Ind., from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Guests are encouraged to visit the fairgrounds during this event to meet with some of the Marines that have been training in the local area over the past couple weeks. A static display with a mix of helicopters, vehicles, weapon systems and a Marine Corps Martial Arts demonstration will be made available to all who attend.
The 24th MEU has spent the last week training in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky as part of their preparation for deployment sometime early next year. Conducting this community outreach event is their way of thanking the community for supporting them while this training was being conducted.
The Marines plan on bringing an MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, CH-53 Super Stallion heavy lift helicopter, UH-1 Huey helicopter and AH-1 Super Cobra helicopter, light armored vehicles (LAV), and a mix of HMMWV’s and transport trucks . There will also be a mix of mortars and machineguns for locals to learn about, with the Marines trained to use these weapons available to answer questions.
This event is completely free and open to the public. The Marines are encouraging anyone in the greater Indianapolis area to come down for the day and learn about the capabilities of the Marine Corps.
