Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join a Marine Corps Band?

In addition to meeting the requirements of becoming a Marine (for more information on becoming a Marine, visit www.marines.com), you must also take a live audition that consists of a prepared solo of your own choice, scales, and sightreading.

Do Marine Musicians have to go through boot camp?

Recruit Training, or "Boot Camp", is a requirement of all Marines, even Marine Musicians. Although the primary role of Marine Musicians is to perform music, every Marine receives basic training at one of the two Marine Corps Recruit Depots (San Diego, California or Parris Island, South Carolina).

How many musicians are in the band?

Each of the twelve Marine Corps Bands consists of between 40 and 50 musicians.

What kind of training is required before I get assigned to a band?

After attending Recruit Training and Marine Combat Training, Marine Musicians attend a six-month basic music course at the Navy School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia.

What kind of travel is involved as a Marine Musician?

For over 200 years, Marine Musicians have been a part of American history and traditions. As such, Marine Corps Bands have performed for dignitaries, celebrities, and heads of state all over the United States and around the world.

Will I be able to further my musical training while I serve?

All active-duty military members are entitled to college tuition assistance programs. Many of our musicians earn their degrees while serving. In addition, Marine Musicians may return to the Navy School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia, for more advanced musical training.

How long do I have to sign up for?

Initial enlistment in the United States Marine Corps is for a term of four years.

What do I do next?
