Colonel Jones graduated from the Naval Academy in May 1989 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Upon completion of The Basic School in December 1989, and subsequently the Ground Supply Officers Course in April 1990, he reported to Camp Lejeune for duty with the 5th Battalion, 10th Marines where he served as the Supply Officer. The highlight of this tour was his deployment with the unit to southwest Asia for participation in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
In May 1993, 1stLt Jones reported to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, for duties with the Weapons and Field Training Battalion. While there, he initially served as the battalion's Supply Officer. In April 1994, he was assigned duties as the Commanding Officer of the Headquarters Company, serving in this capacity until his departure in June 1996. Capt Jones then reported to the Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico and was recognized in May 1997 as an honor graduate.
Upon completing the Amphibious Warfare School, Capt Jones was assigned to the newly formed Chemical and Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF), located aboard Camp Lejeune. While there, he served as CBIRF's supply and fiscal officer, playing an integral role in standing up the organization, and participating in supporting a number of consequence management exercises and operations.
In July 1999, Maj Jones reported for duty with the Defense Supply Center, Columbus, Ohio where he served as the Readiness Officer for the Land Based Weapons Support Group. In this joint assignment, he was primarily responsible for supporting the Army and Marine Corps's equipment readiness, maintenance and rebuild programs, and contingency operations. Major Jones served in this capacity until May 2002. From here, he attended the Army's Command and General Staff College (located at Ft. Leavenworth, KS), graduating in June 2003.
Major Jones then reported to Okinawa, Japan, initially serving as the 3rd Materiel Readiness Battalion's S-3 Officer. During February 2004, Maj Jones deployed as an individual augment to Camp As Saliyah, Qatar in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. While there he served as a Marine liaison in the U. S. Central Command's Forward Headquarters J-3 (Joint Operations Center). Upon completion of this tour of duty (September 2004), Maj Jones returned to MRB, where he served as the Officer in Charge, General Account. Upon promotion to lieutenant colonel in June 2005, he assumed duties as the Officer-in-Charge, Materiel Operations Center. Also, in January 2006, he deployed to the Combined Arms Training Center at Camp Fuji, Japan where he served as the Commanding Officer for the 3d Marine Logistics Group's Materiel Warrior exercise. This was the first Marine Logistics Group deployment to Camp Fuji for the purpose of training Marines and sailors for Operation Iraqi Freedom deployments.
Upon departing Okinawa in June 2006, LtCol Jones reported to the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. While there, he served as the Deputy G-4, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. In this capacity he supported the MAW’s pre-deployment, deployment, and retrograde from Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
In June 2007, LtCol Jones assumed command of the Supply School, Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools at Camp Johnson, NC. He served in this capacity for 24 months, relinquishing command during June 2009. A highlight of his tour there was the improved/updated curriculum of all Supply School programs of instruction, namely the supply, warehousing, traffic management, and preservation, packing, and packaging courses, for the basic, intermediate, advance, and officer courses. Additionally, he oversaw the development and instruction of the first two years of the Marine Corps’ Contingency Contracting Course.
Upon completing the Joint PME course, Phase Two, in August 2009, LtCol Jones reported to the Total Force Structure Division of Marine Corps Combat Development and Integration, and served as the Logistics Combat Element Branch Head until his departure in May 2010. From there, LtCol Jones was assigned to the 2d MLG, where he initially served as the G-4. He was promoted to his present rank in March 2011 and was re-assigned to duties as the 2d MLG’s Chief of Staff.
Colonel Jones’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with two gold stars in lieu of 3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal(with two gold stars in lieu of 3rd award), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Also, he holds a Master of Arts Degree in Management (1995) from Webster University.

Sergeant Major Mafnas enlisted in the Marine Corps in February 1986. After completing MOS training at Twenty-Nine Palms, California, his first assignment was to Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 3d Marine Division as a Communications Center Operator.
In 1987, Lance Corporal Mafnas reported to Marine Security Guard School and was assigned to the American Embassies in Moscow, Russia; Seoul, Korea; and the American Consulate General, Calcutta, India. Upon completion of his tour in June 1990, Sergeant Mafnas was assigned to Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division where he deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
In August of 1993, Sergeant Mafnas reported to Recruiters School and was assigned to Recruiting Station Chicago, Illinois, 9th Marine Corps District. Upon completion of his tour in October 1996, Staff Sergeant Mafnas received orders to 7th Communications Battalion, Bravo Company, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He was later reassigned to Marine Corps Base, G-6, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where he served the remainder of his tour.
In August 2000, Gunnery Sergeant Mafnas reported to Marine Corps Base, G-6, Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan. In May of 2003, he reported to Marine Security Guard School and was assigned to the American Embassy Baku, Azerbaijan as a Detachment Commander. Upon selection to First Sergeant, Gunnery Sergeant Mafnas reported to Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division in February of 2005.
In April 2006, First Sergeant Mafnas received orders to Battery F, 2d Battalion, 11th Marines where he deployed to OIF 5-7 in support of 3d Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division conducting Task Force Military Police combat missions. In August of 2007, he was reassigned to Headquarters Battery, 11th Marine Regiment.
Upon selection to Sergeant Major, he reported to Recruiting Station Seattle, Washington, 12th Marine Corps District in December 2007. On August 2010, Sergeant Major Mafnas was assigned to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 18 and was later reassigned on 7 March 2011 to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1. He currently serves as Combat Logistics Regiment 35 Sergeant Major.
His personal decorations include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. |
