LtCol Kirk D. Mullins was born in Indiana and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in January, 1991 as a 0311 Rifleman with Co K, 3/24. He graduated from Purdue University in December 1993 with a degree in Political Science and was commissioned a 2ndLt. Following his graduation from The Basic School in April 1995 and Infantry Officers Course in May 1995, he reported to the Assault Amphibian Officers Course in June 1995 and graduated in September.
In October 1995, he reported to Company A, 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division for duty as a Platoon Commander and later as the Company Executive Officer. During this tour, LtCol Mullins deployed to Liberia, Africa, as a member of the SPMAGTF, JTF-Liberia in support of 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines and Operation Assured Response. LtCol Mullins reported to The Basic School in November 1997 as the AAV Platoon Commander and as a Tactics Instructor.
In January 2000, he completed his tour at The Basic School as a Staff Platoon Commander for Company D and reported to Fort Knox, KY, as a student in the U.S. Army Armor Officer Advanced Course. Returning to 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion in June 2000, LtCol Mullins’ duties included Battalion Operations Officer, Commander of Company A, and Battalion Logistics Officer, where he deployed with the Battalion in support of 1st Marine Division in Operation Iraqi Freedom I. Upon his return from OIF I in May 2003, LtCol Mullins reported to the Direct Reporting Program Manager – Advanced Amphibious Assault as the Head of Guns and Ammunition on the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle.
Upon completion of that tour, LtCol Mullins reported to 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 29 Palms, CA, in July 2006, as the Commander of Company D (REIN). In October 2006, he deployed the company to OIF 05-07/06-08 as a Provisional Rifle Company in support of RCT-7 and RCT-2 and commanded all ground forces for AO Baghdadi. In June 2008, LtCol Mullins reported to Marine Corps Systems Command as the Future Upgrades Team Leader for PM AAV and upon his selection to LtCol, returned to the EFV Program, as the Deputy Director for Systems Engineering. LtCol Mullins is married and they have one daughter, who is a college sophomore.
His personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/ 2 Gold Stars, the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
