Sergeant Major Sims

     Sergeant Major Sims attended college at Central Methodist College in Fayetteville, MO and Central Texas University School, from which he was awarded an Associate’s Degree in General, Studies. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 4 April 1983, and attended boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA. In September 1983, after completing U.S. Army Transportation School he was transferred to 3rd FSSG, Beach and Terminal Operations Co, Okinawa for duties as a long shore man. In September 1984 he was transferred to 1st FSSG, H&S Battalion, MCB, Camp Pendleton, Calif where he served as G-4 clerk for the Deputy Commander of 1st Force Service Support Group. He was meritoriously promoted to Corporal in December 1985.

     In July of 1986, Sergeant Major Sims’s was transferred to H&S Battalion, MCB, Quantico, Virginia, where he served as the Corporal of the Guard for the ASP until December 1986.  After serving six months of guard duty, Sergeant Major Sims was reassigned to Transportation Management Office where he served as the NCOIC of the Passenger Service Department. In August of 1988, Sergeant Major Sims made a lateral move to the 0481 field and was transferred to 2nd Landing Support Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group, Camp, Lejeune, NC.  He was promoted to Sergeant in October of 1988. 

     In January 1990, Sergeant Major Sims was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif, where he served as a drill instructor and senior drill instructor at 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.  In July 1992, he was transferred to 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade Kaneohe, Bay Hawaii and served as Platoon Sergeant for 2nd Platoon Beach and Terminal Operations Co. In July 1994, Sergeant Major Sims made a lateral move to the 0431 field and was transferred to 1ST Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Iwakuni, Japan and served as the Embarkation Chief. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in February of 1995.

     In July 1995 he was transferred to Okinawa Japan, this time serving with 3rd Force Service Support Group, G-3 LMCC.  He served as the Embarkation Chief and Strategic Mobility Chief. During his tour his oversight of the embarkation of personnel and equipment to over 30 demanding exercises conducted in the Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, and the Kingdom of Thailand was superior in all respects. In January 1999, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.

     In July 1999 he was transferred to Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, DC and  assumed duties as the enlisted 04XX Occupational  Field Sponsor for Installations & Logistics, Logistic, Plans and Capabilities.  Sergeant Major Sims was the senior enlisted advisor/mentor to approximately 4200 Marines and to 300 staff/instructors in various MOS’s i.e. embarkation, air delivery, combat service support chief, landing support, along with all the advanced courses.

     In May 2002, he was promoted to First Sergeant and was assigned to Marine Aviation Detachment in Patuxent River, Maryland.  During this assignment he played key roles as the entire MV-22 relocated from Patuxent River, Maryland to Camp Lejeune, NC.

     In March 2005, Sergeant Major Sims was transferred to 1st Marine Logistics Group, Camp Pendleton, Calif and assumed the duties as the First Sergeant, Combat Logistics Company 117.  In March 2006, he was promoted to his current rank, and assumed duties, as the Marine Wing Support Squadron – 373 Sergeant Major. During this time Sergeant Major Sims has been deployed to the Far East serving two tours in Iraq.

    In June 2009, Sergeant Major Sims was transferred back to Marine Aviation Detachment, Patuxent River MD. Where he continues to serve honorably as the Detachment Sergeant Major. 

     His personal decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal; gold star in lieu of second award Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; gold star in lieu of third award.
