Pendleton hosts comedy night

Laughter filled the walls of Camp Pendleton’s Chronic Cantina, as comedians from “R Funny Productions” performed for base residents, Jan. 27.

R Funny Productions visited the base as part of their coastal tour and is the tour group’s first stop to a military installation. Ralph Figueroa, the group’s host and producer, plans on scheduling more events on other bases to show his support.

“It’s personal for us. It’s our way of giving back to the military community,” said Figueroa. “Our shows are morale builders. It’s a way for [Marines] to unwind.”

The best part of the show was when [Alex Schutz] performed, said Cpl. Dalis R. House, a low-altitude air defense gunner with the 3rd Low-Altitude Air Defense Battalion.

“I was able to relate to his jokes more than the others,” said House.

House said he attended the comedy show after a friend recommended he see it.

When comedian Alex Schutz took center stage, he immediately poked fun at the difficulties of locating a specific destination while driving through Camp Pendleton.

“This place is impossible to find,” said Schutz. “I took a left off the freeway and suddenly the hills had eyes.”

Comedian and co-producer of R Funny Productions, Richard Barba, comes from a military family, and strongly believes that the humor he provides for the Marines is very beneficial.

“It’s an up-lifter for the Marines,” said Barba. “Events like these give them something to do on base.”

Service members also recognized the importance of comic relief in a military lifestyle.

“Tonight was a good night,” said Cpl. James D. Clark, a LAAD gunner with 3rd LAAD Bn., with a smile on his face. “The people that came had a great time.”

Comedians from R Funny Productions are scheduled to perform again Feb. 24 at the Chronic Cantina.
