The All-Marine Warrior Games Team were presented the Chairman's Cup at the closing ceremonies of the inaugural Warrior Games. The Games, which took place May 10 -14, 2010 at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, showcased Wounded, Ill and Injured (WII) service members from all branches – Marines, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard and Navy.
“All the services had a great showing and presented stiff competition for the Marine Team,” said Colonel Greg Boyle, Commanding Officer, Wounded Warrior Regiment. There was intense competition in the following events; swimming, cycling, track & field, shooting, archery, wheelchair basketball, and seated volleyball. However, Boyle continued, “the Marine Team never gave up - our Marines came to win.” Marine's won back-to-back medals in sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball, a gold and silver medal in archery, two gold in cycling, nine gold in track and seven gold in swimming.
The Warrior Games were designed to elevate abilities through athletic competition for WII service members, providing a focal event to empower the incorporation of athletics into Military Service Wounded Warrior Programs. The Warrior Games will be an annual event to celebrate the achievement and abilities of WII service members, while building camaraderie and raising awareness for adaptive sports. Boyle said, “The Marine Corps looks forward to fielding additional athletes in future games,” noting how the games are in synch with the WWR’s ongoing efforts to ensure WII Marines focus on their abilities, thrive within their new normal, and encourage others.
