Sexual Assault Prevention Month

On April 12, Col. Roarke L. Anderson, commanding officer, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps,  will proclaim April 2010 Sexual Assault Awareness Month for the Marines in the National Capital Region at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Arlington, Va.

The month-long observance will include active public and private efforts in collaboration with commanders and service members, including awareness about sexual violence, how to prevent it and how to help survivors.

“Sexual assault is an intolerable and violent crime and has a significant effect on survivors,” Anderson said.  “We urge everyone to show ‘our strength is for defending’ by observing this month and by becoming aware of the impact sexual assault has on our service members and their families.”

Events sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services that will be held throughout the month include the 4th Annual Chili Cook-off, a proclamation signing and balloon release, a 5K run, a child abuse and sexual assault prevention breakfast, as well as mandatory training on the subject for Marines within the battalion.
