Sergeant Major, MARCENT 

Sergeant Major John J. McGovern enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1978. He Reported To Parris Island, SC in July 1979 for training with Second Recruit Training Battalion. Sergeant Major Carter reported to Infantry Training School, Camp Geiger, NC for training as a Rifleman.

Sergeant Major McGovern enlisted in the Marine Corps, September 1982 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. Following recruit training he went to Infantry Training School, Camp Pendleton, California where he received the 0311 and 0351 MOS’s. In February 1983, SgtMaj McGovern was transferred to 2nd Marine Division and trained as a 0352. He was assigned to 2nd Tank Battalion and 6th Marine Regiment. In 1985, he was selected as the Fleet Marine Forces Atlantic NCO of the Year.
 
In March 1986, he was transferred to Drill Instructor School, Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon graduation, he was assigned to 3rd Recruit Training Battalion where he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.
 
In June 1988, SgtMaj McGovern transferred to 3rd Marine Regiment for duties as a Reconnaissance, Rifle, S.T.A., T.O.W. and 81 mm Mortar Platoon Sergeant. While a member of 3rd Marines he participated in operation “Desert Shield” and “Desert Storm”.
 
In June 1991, he transferred to United States Central Command (CENTCOM) for duties pertaining to ground operations in the Middle East and Africa. While assigned to CENTCOM he was a member of Joint Special Operations Task Forces that deployed and participated in operations “Southern Watch”, “Provide Relief” and “Restore Hope”.
 
In February 1994, he transferred to Marine Barracks, Washington D.C. for duties as a Ceremonial Platoon Sergeant and Company Gunnery Sergeant for Company B. In August 1995, he was selected and assumed duties as the Guard Chief for the Presidential Support Program.
 
In January 1997, he transferred to Marine Barracks Ground Defense / Security Force, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for duties as a Company Gunnery Sergeant and Company First Sergeant for Rifle Security Company Leeward.
 
In January 1998, SgtMaj McGovern was selected for assignment to the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Quantico, Virginia for duty as a Faculty Advisor for the Advanced Course. In September 1999, he was reassigned as the SNCOIC of the Sergeants Course. In December 1999, he was selected as the Instructor of the Year for all of the SNCO Academies and was the recipient of the Elihu Rose Award for teaching excellence.
 
In September 2000, he was transferred to 4th Civil Affairs Group, Washington D.C. for duty as the First Sergeant. In May 2002, he was assigned as the Company First Sergeant, Ammunition Company, 3d Materiel Readiness Battalion, 3d FSSG. In May 2003, he was assigned as Battery First Sergeant, 2d Battalion, 10th Marines, 2d Marine Division. In April 2004, he was assigned as the Site Sergeant Major, HMM 764 and HMH 769, Marine Aircraft Group 46, Detachment B, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. In April 2006, he was assigned as the Sergeant Major for VMFA 122, Marine Aircraft Group 31, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing. In July 2009, he was assigned the Sergeant Major 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, II Marine Expeditionary Force. In October 2011, he assumed his current assignment as the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command (Forward) Sergeant Major.
 
SgtMaj McGovern’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with four gold stars and the Combat Action Ribbon. He has also distinguished himself while attending his resident PME by earning the Honor Graduate in the NCO School, the Career Course, the Advanced Course and the Infantry Platoon Sergeant Course.
SgtMaj McGovern is married to the former Kathryn Peace, United States Army retired. They have two sons; Bryce (15) and Kyle (13).
