Sergeant Major Timothy P. Lamar


SgtMaj Lamar was born in Holland Michigan, enlisted in the United States Marines Corps in July 1981 on the Delayed Entry Program, and graduated from Holland Christian High School in June 1982.

He graduated as the Platoon and Series Honor man for Plt 2061, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, , and was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class.

PFC Lamar was then Honor Graduate of Infantry Training School at Camp Pendleton, became an 0341 Mortorman, and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal.

In November 1982, LCpl Lamar was assigned to the Guard Section, Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., for on the job training and later assignment to the Presidential Retreat, Camp David in October 1983.

While at Camp David, he was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant (meritoriously) and attended Scout Sniper Instructor School in Quantico, Virginia.

In December 1986, Sgt Lamar was transferred to 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines and became the Mortor Section Leader for Golf Company. In 1987 he became a Sniper Team Leader in the Battalion's Sniper Platoon. He conducted two Unit Deployments to Okinawa, Japan, in support of exercises in South Korea and the Philippians.

Sgt Lamar was transferred in December 1989 to the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, California. As a Unit Operations Instructor, he revised the Sniper Package for the specialized training of the Unit's Sniper Platoons. During the Gulf War, he deployed to Norway for Battle Griffin to act as an advisor for 4th Force Recon. As a Mountain Leader Instructor, he took part in three expeditions, and reached the summits of Mount Baker, Oregon, Mount Rainier, Washington, and Mount McKinley, Alaska.

After attendance at the Infantry Platoon Sergeant's Course, in 1993, Staff Sergeant Lamar was transferred to 1st Battalion 7th Marines in 29 Palms, California, where he became the Sniper Platoon Commander, conducting two unit deployments to Okinawa, Japan, and support of exercises in Thailand, and Russia.

SSgt Lamar was transferred to Marine Corps Security Forces, and attended the Supervisor's Course in Chesapeake, Virginia, in August 1996. He was then assigned to Marine Corps Security Force, North Island, California.

In September 1998, Gunnery Sergeant Lamar was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. He was the Honor Graduate for Drill Instructor School 1-99, and was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Chief Drill Instructor.

In May 2001, First Sergeant Lamar was transferred to 7th Engineer Support Battalion and served as the Company 1stSgt for Support Company. In Jan 2003, he became the SgtMaj of MSSG 11, and deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom. In May 2005 SgtMaj Lamar was assigned as the SgtMaj of 1st Maintenance Battalion, and deployed in Feb 2006 as the SgtMaj of Combat Logistics Regiment 15 Forward.

In July 2007, SgtMaj Lamar was transferred to Marine Wing Support Squadron 47 for duty as the Site SgtMaj.

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Good Conduct medal with one silver, and two bronze stars, and the Presidential Service Badge.
