Lieutenant Colonel Brian O’Leary graduated Penn State University in May 1990. The following year, he attended Officer Candidates School at Quantico, Virginia. He was commissioned on 16 August 1991, and was assigned to Alpha Company at The Basic School.
Upon graduation from TBS, he reported to Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and graduated in April 1992. He reported to Battery T, 5th Battalion, 10th Marines, and was assigned as a Forward Observer. In this capacity, he was attached to Company I, Battalion Landing Team 3/6 for the unit’s deployment with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. This deployment included service in Mogadishu, Somalia during Operation Restore Hope.
Upon BLT 3/6’s return to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, 1st Lieutenant O’Leary assumed the duties of Tango Battery’s Guns Platoon Commander, and led his platoon during two consecutive Combined Arms Exercises in Twentynine Palms, California.
In April 1995, O’Leary was assigned to Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines, and served as 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander for three years.
In November 2000, Major O’Leary was assigned to lead 2/25’s Scout Sniper Platoon, and held that billet until December 2001.
When 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines was activated in response to the September 11th attacks, Major O’Leary returned to Weapons Company, where he served as Executive Officer. He served in this billet for the duration of the unit’s active service in Camp Lejeune in 2002. In March 2003, when the Battalion was tasked for service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Major O’Leary assumed the role of Fire Support Coordinator and Information Operations Officer, and served in these capacities in the Dhi Qar province of Iraq.
In September 2004, Major O’Leary assumed command of Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines.
In August 2006, he attended the Reserve Infantry Officers Course and served as class leader.
In December 2006, Major O’Leary was appointed Executive Officer, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines.
He was promoted to his current rank on July 1, 2007.
Lieutenant Colonel O’Leary attended the US Army Basic Airborne Course in August 2007. He was named the class’ Officer Honor Graduate.
