Colonel Philip J. Zimmerman

Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina

Colonel Zimmerman graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He is also a graduate of the Naval War College and holds a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Colonel Zimmerman was commissioned in the Marine Corps through the Platoon Leaders Class program in 1987. He attended The Basic School and subsequently completed Naval Flight Officer training in 1989 at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.

Colonel Zimmerman's aviation experience is in the EA-6B Prowler. His operational assignments include four tours in all of the Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadrons located at MCAS Cherry Point and duty as a flight instructor with Electronic Attack Squadron One Two Nine. Most recently, he served as the Chief of Staff, 2D MAW (Fwd).

Colonel Zimmerman's operational aviation experience includes two deployments to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan; two deployments to Aviano Air Base, Italy; and as the Commanding Officer of VMAQ-4, a deployment to Al Asad Air Base, Iraq. His staff assignments include tours at the Department of Aviation Manpower and Support (ASM), Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps; Branch Head, Special Activities, J-3 Plans, U.S. Central Command; and as the Director of 2D MAW's Aviation Training System (ATS).
