Century Club welcomes military on greens at PGA TOUR

David Feherty, a CBS Sports golf analyst,  entertained hundreds of  service members and sponsors with his sharp wit Jan. 26 during a Military Appreciation Luncheon sponsored by The Century Club of San Diego and Farmers Insurance Group.

The luncheon was a precursor to the PGA Tour “The Farmers Insurance Open” golf tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course from Jan. 28-31.

In addition to the free admission to the tournament, The Century Club offers active-duty service members and their immediate families free access to the Military Appreciation Pavilion.

“It’s our way to say thank you to all the military members and sworn peace officers who do a great job of making our lives better and keeping us safe,” said Tom Wornham, the President of The Century Club and General Chairman of the 2010 Farmers Insurance Open.

The private tent sits at the 14th green with complimentary food and refreshments, a special spectator area for outdoor viewing, and an inside television coverage. It will be open from Thursday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s an honor to be able to play for free on a beautiful course near the ocean while the PGA Tour is going on only hundreds of feet away from us,” said Cpl. Robert Betz, a safety and survival specialist with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 who will be playing in the tournament.

Service members playing golf get the chance to play the North course while the PGA Tour plays on the South course with the background sounds of the Pacific Ocean waves crashing near the bottom of the cliffs.

This year marks the first time military members will play and watch for free, explained Wornham. The Century Club is a charity non-profit organization with the main purpose of administering and promoting the San Diego’s annual Farmers Insurance Open.  Founded in 1961, the net earnings of the corporation are used solely for charitable purposes with the primary support of San Diego County Junior Golf Association and other charities and golf related activities in the San Diego area.

Military members must bring their Department of Defense identification cards, but leave their cameras and cell phones at home.  Parking is available off site with free shuttles to the golf course.
