Colonel Jeffrey “Huey” Hewlett is a native of North Babylon, New York. He graduated SUNY, Stony Brook with a BA in History in 1984. Upon commissioning through the PLC program, he reported to The Basic School in September 1984, graduating in April 1985 as a distinguished graduate, and while holding an aviation guarantee, subsequently reported as a student to the Infantry Officer’s Course graduating in June 1985. 2ndLt Hewlett was assigned to MCRD, San Diego in July 1985 and served consecutively as Assistant Series Commander and Series Commander for a period of 12 months while awaiting an opening to Flight School.
After completing Flight training and receiving his wings as a distinguished graduate in December 1987, he reported for AH-1J attack helicopter training at HMT-303 aboard MCAS, Camp Pendleton, CA. 1stLt Hewlett reported to his first fleet squadron (HML/A-167) in July 1988 at MCAS New River, NC. During this tour, he served in multiple ground assignments and as the Squadron WTI, completing two LF6F deployments with HMM-261 (participating in contingency operations in Liberia, Bosnia and Croatia) and two deployments in support of Operation UPHOLD DEMOCRACY in Haiti. 1stLt Hewlett was promoted to Captain in September 1989. Capt Hewlett was nominated by 2nd MAW for the MCAA Aviator of the Year in 1993.
In June 1994, Capt Hewlett reported to the Amphibious Warfare School where he graduated a distinguished graduate in May 1995. Captain Hewlett subsequently reported to 6th Marines as an Air/Ground Exchange Officer serving consecutively as Regimental S-4A and S-4. Captain Hewlett was promoted to Major in October 1995.
In October 1997, Major Hewlett reported back to HMT-303 for refresher training and subsequently reported to HML/A-269 in December 1997. During his second fleet tour, Major Hewlett served as the Squadron Tactics Officer, Operations Officer and Executive Officer. He also served as the HML/A Detachment OIC for an HMM-162 LF6F deployment, participating in contingency operations in Kosovo and Macedonia.
In November 1999, Major Hewlett reported to HQMC (Deputy Commandant for Aviation) as the Aviation Weapons Requirements Officer and was promoted to LtCol in November 2000. He was transferred to Marine Aircraft Group 29 in July 2002 where he served as the Headquarters Squadron Commanding Officer and the Group Executive Officer. LtCol Hewlett assumed command of HML/A-269 on November 22, 2003. Shortly thereafter, he deployed the unit to the Persian Gulf as part of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and took part in Operation Iraqi Freedom under 3d MAW where he flew 55 combat missions and led the Squadron in completing nearly 3000 combat flight hours in 55 days.
LtCol Hewlett relinquished command of HML/A-269 in April 2004 and was transferred to the Joint Staff (J-5) with duty in New York City at the United States Mission to the United Nations. LtCol Hewlett served as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Military Staff Committee (MSC) and the Deputy Military Advisor to the U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN. He was promoted to his current rank on the first of September, 2006 and assumed the duties as Chief of Staff, MSC and Military Advisor concurrently to U.S. Ambassador John Bolton and U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad. Col Hewlett was transferred to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in August 2007 where he has served as the G-3 Operations officer until June 2009.
Colonel Hewlett has flown over 3200 mishap-free hours in attack helicopters to include the AH-1J, AH-1T and AH-1W. His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (Gold Star in lieu of second award), Air Medal with Strike/Flight numeral 5, Single Mission Air Medal for heroic action (with combat distinguishing device) and the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two gold stars in lieu of second and third awards).
