Upon arriving on Okinawa, your sponsor should arrange for you to stay at one of the many government approved TLA facilities until you have found suitable housing for your family.
Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) is authorized to assist the service member in offsetting expenses incurred during the occupancy of temporary lodging. There is no entitlement to TLA while in a travel status by Privately Owned Vehicle from the Airport or once permanent quarters are occupied. TLA is contingent upon the following:
Marines must utilize a government TLA facility, i.e., Westpac Lodge or Courtney Lodge, unless an endorsement is obtained stating that the facility closest to their place of work is not available for occupancy. If the member chooses to live at an off base temporary lodging facility (TLF), i.e., Eagle, Hamagawa, or New Courtney Lodge, then the member's lodging reimbursement under TLA will be limited to the government TLF rate, not the rate of the off base TLF. Upon arrival, Navy personnel should check with their personnel support detachment for current guidelines.
There is no TLA entitlement for service members on an unaccompanied tour, unless the MCB Camp Butler Billeting office has issued a nonavailability statement certifying that there are no single type quarters available for occupancy. This includes active duty couples who are both serving unaccompanied tours.
The Joint Housing Referral Offices at Kadena Air Base Bldg. 217, Camp Kinser Bldg. 107 and Camp Courtney Bldg. 4460 have listings of local economy quarters that have been inspected and are ready for immediate occupancy. It is the members option not to accept available adequate quarters. However, declining available adequate quarters due to personal preference is not sufficient justification to remain in a TLA status.
Personnel accompanied by dependents must be prepared to pay $600 to $2,500 for temporary lodging and subsistence for the initial 15-day period. Personnel are eligible for TLA to offset costs until private/government quarters are obtained (normally a period of approximately 20-30 days). For a family consisting of one active duty member and three dependents the cost currently is $150.00 per day on base and can go up to $300.00 per day off base.
If the Marine does not have sufficient funds to pay for the lodging bill then a copy of the lodging receipts may be submitted in lieu of a paid receipt. An authenticated bill consists of the name and phone number of the TLF, period covered, lodging cost, and signature of the TLF representative. Advance payment of TLA is authorized and can be requested before or after arrival. TLA payments will be made directly to your direct deposit account. Contact your sponsor or Okinawan command POC for details on requesting an advance of TLA. More information regarding TLA will be provided upon your arrival.
On base TLF's are operated by the Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) and will accept commercial credit cards for payment.
On base Temporary Lodging Facilities are normally limited to thirty days maximum. For a family of four, the base facilities will cost approximately $70.00 per day (lodging only). To obtain directions to any of these facilities from your port of entry please call the facility below.
There are also many off-base temporary facilities. These can range from $30 to $250 per day.
