LtCol Guy R. Coursey

Lieutenant Colonel Coursey, a native of Eagle River, Alaska, was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps upon commissioning from the US Naval Academy in 1991. Following completion of The Basic School and Engineer Officer Basic Course he was assigned to 9th Engineer Support Battalion in Okinawa, Japan. He served as Engineer Platoon Commander with Company C, participating in exercises throughout WESTPAC, including Team Spirit and Balakatan. In 1993 he was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron-171 at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. During this tour he served successively as Engineer Equipment Platoon OIC, Engineer Division OIC, and Squadron S4, participating in numerous joint/combined exercises and construction projects over a period of three years.
In 1996 LtCol Coursey was assigned as a student to the Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia, where he graduated with honors. Subsequently he was assigned as the Inspector-Instructor for Bulk Fuel Company C, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, in Phoenix, Arizona. After completing his tour in Phoenix, he was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as Support Company Commander, and later as Headquarters and Support Company Commander. Following promotion to Major, he was re-assigned as Division Engineer Officer, 2nd Marine Division, where he participated in numerous exercises, and was responsible for coordinating facilities requirements in support of the Division buildup resulting from the attacks of September 11, 2001. In 2002 LtCol Coursey was again re-assigned to the newly created 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (AT) as Engineer Officer and later Commander of the Brigade Headquarters Company. In January 2004 he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom for service as Engineer Plans Officer, Joint Task Force Seven (later MNC-I), at Camp Victory, Baghdad, Iraq, where he participated in planning multiple operations, including theater engineer support for the first battle of Fallujah. In July 2004 LtCol Coursey returned to 4th MEB, and was re-assigned later that year to serve as acting MEF Engineer Officer, II Marine Expeditionary Force.
In July 2005 LtCol Coursey was assigned to the MAGTF Staff Training Program (MSTP), in Quantico, Virginia, first as Engineer Instructor, and later as the Exercise Design Officer, responsible for the planning and execution of multiple exercises in support of joint forces, including Mission Rehearsal Exercises (MRX) prepatory to OIF deployments of I MEF and II MEF. Upon promotion in 2007, Lieutenant Colonel Coursey was assigned as Operations Officer, Marine Wing Support Group -17, at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, where he planned and participated in numerous readiness exercises and operations in the Philippines, Thailand, Australia and South Korea. In 2009 LtCol Coursey reported to 4th Marine Regiment for training and subsequent deployment to Afghanistan as OIC for Embedded Training Team 4-5, Regional Coalition Advisory Command 3-7, Task Force Phoenix, in support of of Operation Enduring Freedom. During this period LtCol Coursey was advisor to three Afghan infantry kandaks (Bns), where he planned and participated in combat operations in cooperation with two US Army Brigade Combat Teams in Wardak Province. Following return to Okinawa in April 2010, LtCol Coursey was subsequently assigned to duty as Installation and Environment Operations Officer, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In November of the same year he received orders to his current assignment as Executive Officer and Operations Officer of the Marine Corps Engineer Center at Courthouse Bay.
LtCol Coursey is a graduate of US Army Airborne School, Marine Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course, High Risk Personnel course, and the Marine Corps Command and Staff non-resident program. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Business Management from Troy State University, and a Master of Science Degree in Military History of Land Warfare from American Military University. His personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and Navy Marine Corps Commendation medal with one gold star.
