GENERAL INFORMATION

ABOUT THE LIBRARY OF THE MARINE CORPS (LOMC)

The Library of the Marine Corps is the premier academic research library within the U.S. Marine Corps.  It directly supports the colleges and schools of the Marine Corps University as well as the research of Marines and scholars interested in studying the U.S. Marine Corps worldwide. It consists of 4 Branches: The USMC Research Library, The USMC Archives & Special Collections, The Quantico Base Library and The Virtual Library.

DIRECTIONS

Base Access
Marine Corps Base, Quantico is located off of Interstate 95 in Virginia, 36 miles south of Washington D.C. and 20 miles north of Fredericksburg.

Military and DoD personnel need their DoD identification to enter the base. Marine sentries assist visitors arriving at the base; visitors are issued vehicle passes and given directions to their destination. Proper identification, such as a state driver’s license, is required to get onto base. Vehicles may be subject to search.

The two airports closest to MCB Quantico are Dulles International, located in Centerville, Va., and Ronald Reagan Washington National, in Washington, D.C. Shuttle services are available from both. A Greyhound bus terminal is located in nearby Triangle, Va. and The Town of Quantico is a stop for both Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express train services.

From I-95: Take exit 150, Quantico/Triangle. Take route 619 east to the entrance of the base. Pass through the gate and follow Fuller Road for approximately 3 miles. (Quantico strictly enforces the speed limits.) Bear right. Fuller Road becomes Barnett Avenue. Turn left at the second traffic light (before the Quantico Fire Station) onto Martin Avenue, and go underneath the railroad bridge. Turn right at the stop sign onto Broadway Street. The Alfred M. Gray Research Center is located on the left. Parking is available in the lot in front of the building.

Additional map & information available at MCBQ website.

All circulating items check out for 30 days.  Most may be renewed unless there is a waiting list.  Reference, Rare Books and Special Collections and Archival collections are non-circulating.  Lost or damaged materials must be replaced.

CHECKING OUT/CLEARING BASE

Patrons transferring away from MCB Quantico are required to check with Circulation Desk to ensure no items remain outstanding on either their own, or their family members’, library accounts.

CHILDREN

Children are especially welcome in the Quantico Base Library located on the first floor of the GRC.  The Base Library offers numerous events for children including regularly scheduled story-time sessions.  Children under 10 years of age must be supervised by a parent or guardian and not left unattended.

The Quantico Base Library follows the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement.  Parents and guardians are responsible for determining which library materials and services their children may access.  The library staff does not serve in loco parenti, that is, in place of parents.  Although the library does not employ internet filtering software, it has installed a special family friendly page on the family library computers to assist parents in guiding their children's internet use.

COMPUTER ACCESS

The USMC Research Library has 50 computers for patron use.  Computers are open to patrons on a first come, first served-basis. No sign-up is required.  If all computers are in use, priority is given to students in any of the MCU schools.  A limited number of scanners are also available for patron use.

Copiers are available on the first floor located near the reference desk.  Copier use is limited to reproducing materials from the Library collections and is subject to copyright laws. Patrons cannot use the copiers to copy service records books, etc. Microform reader-printers are also located on the first floor.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

The interlibrary loan (ILL) system is an agreement between libraries to share materials.  For registered borrowers, the LoMC ILL Clerk will attempt to borrow from other libraries needed materials not available in the Library’s collections.  The process usually takes 5-10 days, or longer.  Lending libraries determine the length of the loan, which is usually 2-3 weeks.

There is no charge for this service.  ILL request forms are available at the reference desk.  If you are not a registered borrower of the LoMC, but would like to borrow from our collection, you may submit a request for an interlibrary loan through your local library.

INTERNET ACCESS / WI-FI

Wired and wireless Internet access provided throughout the library.  Please note that the quality of the wireless signal depends on where you are sitting in the building and the possibly the condition or quality of your notebook/laptop pc. The GRC IT staff is not authorized to assist individuals with troubleshooting their personal electronic equipment.

Headphones for Internet use are available at the Circulation Desk for in-house use only.

MARINE CORPS READING LIST

Marine Corps Reading List books are located on the second floor of the LoMC.  All titles, including audio tapes & CDs are located here.

Multiple copies of most of these books are available for registered users to borrow.  A few are out of print and copies are limited.  If you are a Marine, not located at Quantico, your base library should have copies that you can borrow. We do not lend our USMC Reading List copies to other libraries, nor can we purchase copies for units.
