Red Team (DoD definition)
An organizational element comprised of trained and educated members that provide an independent capability to fully explore alternatives in plans and operations in the context of the operational environment and from the perspective of adversaries and others.
In his Planning Guidance, Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen James Amos has called for the return of Red Teams (red cells) as a top priority:
Institute Red Cell CG MCCDC & CG TECOM - develop a plan for instituting a Red Cell at each MEF
and in each deploying MEB. CG TECOM and President MCU will further develop the curriculum to
institutionalize Red Teaming within resident SNCO and Officer (CLS, ILS, TLS and SAW) PME courses.
The purpose of this cell is to challenge prevailing notions, rigorously test current TTPs and counter
group-think.

Red Team Resources
Marine Corps Center for Lessons Learned (MCCLL)
Researchers with CAC access can search MCCLL's After Action Reports, Observations, Recommendations, and other relevant material submitted by operating forces. While many documents are For Official Use Only (FOUO), MCCLL also contains unclassified documents approved for public release.
A simple search for "red teaming" will provide a list of related search terms such as red cell, red forces, red team, red team assessments, planning team, and others, as well as a results listing of reports and documents with the most relevant titles listed first.
Red Team Journal
Red Team Journal (RTJ), launched in 1997, was designed in part to encourage decision makers to consider alternative perspectives to national security issues. Later, the focus shifted to red teaming methods. Today, RTJ embraces all forms of red teaming and alternative analysis, and has expanded to include business strategy and non-military national security concerns.
The RTJ team maintains a list of books that are relevant to red teamers, analysts, and decision makers. The following articles, books and website resources are available at or via the Library of the Marine Corps:
