Sergeant Major Smith completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Ca. in December 1988 and was assigned to the School of Infantry for training as an 0311. He graduated in March of 1989 with honors and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal.
In March of 1989, Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to 1st Battalion 4th Marines where he served as a rifleman, assault climber, scout swimmer and fire team leader.
In June of 1990 Sergeant Major Smith deployed with the 13th MEU (SOC) in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
In September 1991, Sergeant Major Smith was transferred to 1st Force Reconnaissance Company and served as a recon scout. He attended the Basic Reconnaissance Course, Army Airborne, Navy Dive School, SERE School, and the Sergeants Course. During this tour he was deployed with the 13th MEU (SOC) in support of Operation Restore Hope, Somalia in October of 1993.
In October of 1994 Sergeant Major Smith was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Ca. where he served as a drill instructor and senior drill instructor with K Company, 3d Recruit Training Battalion. In January 1997, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
In January 1997, Sergeant Major Smith was transferred to 1st Force Reconnaissance Company for duty as a recon team leader. He attended Static Line Jumpmaster School, Military Free Fall School, Summer Mountain Leader School, Army Ranger (enlisted honor grad), Military Free Fall Jumpmaster School, and the Staff NCO Career Course. During this tour he deployed with the 13th MEU (SOC) and the 15th MEU (SOC) in November 2001 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In May 2002, Sergeant Major Smith transferred to the University of San Diego for duties as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor and the First Sergeant of the MECEP Preparatory School. During this tour he completed 60 units at National University and attended the Staff NCO Advanced Course.
Sergeant Major Smith was selected to the rank of First Sergeant and transferred to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion in February, 2005 where he served as the B Company First Sergeant and the Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant. During this tour he deployed twice to Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In January, 2008, Sergeant Major Smith was transferred to the School of Infantry (West) for duties as the Reconnaissance Training Company First Sergeant.
Sergeant Major Smith was selected to his current rank and reassigned to the serve as the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion Sergeant Major in February 2009.
Sergeant Major Smith was transferred to the Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Iwakuni, Japan in September of 2009 for duties as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Smith was transferred to Headquarters and Support Battalion, School of Infantry West in September of 2011 for duties as the Battalion Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Smith’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal w/ 1 gold star in lieu of 2nd award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/ combat distinguishing device and 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon w/ 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award.
Sergeant Major Smith is married to the former Catherine Marie Penaflor and they have three children, Jacob, Hannah, and Lance. |
