More Information
Using a fictional scenario focusing on peacekeeping operations, the U.S. Army participants partnered with a TNI Brigade for the staff exercise. Petty Officer Justin Rouse reports. Suggested Tag:Garuda Shield is a regularly schedule, bilateral exercise sponsored by U.S. Army Pacific and hosted annually by the Tentara Nasional Indonesia. Reporter:One of the many training opportunities for Garuda Shield includes a staff training exercise for tactical planning and political engagements. SB: COL Robert Lesher (Brigade Commander 103 Troop Command, Army National Guard):Our unit’s mission is to conduct staff planning with the TNI, the Indonesian Army, and really go through the MDMP and execution of a military plan. So it is a staff training exercise and one of the things we want to do is achieve interoperability between U.S. and TNI.Most of all of our engagements have been with our TNI counterparts so we can build that trust and relationship so the exercise actually has been going a lot smoother as we had more engagements. We developed a deeper relationship. Right now, one of our hurdles is the language barrier, but I think we have addressed that and we have interpreters so we have been alternating between briefing in Bahassa, Indonesia and English. And that seems to work out fairly well.Reporter:Petty Officer Justin Rouse, Asum Bagus, Indonesia.
