The sun rises as the 2nd Marine Division commanding officer, Maj. Gen. John K. Love, speaks to the division Marines with words of encouragement and motivation at the 2nd MarDiv 50 mile hike at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Feb. 1, 2017. After the hike's opening ceremony, the Marines gathered at the starting point, ready to set off. The hike originated in 1908 with an executive order administered by then president Theodore Roosevelt and has since then only been attempted and completed twice since its inception.
