Colonel Stewart graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in May 1988. Upon graduating from The Basic School, he reported to NAS Pensacola for flight training. He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in April 1989.
After initial training in the EA-6B as an Electronic Countermeasures Officer, he reported to VMAQ-2 (Det X-ray) in August 1991. Over the next three years he deployed twice to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program with VMAQ-1. In November 1994, Captain Stewart was attached to VMAQ-4 and VMFA(AW)-332 for Operations DENY FLIGHT and DECISIVE ENDEAVOR, supporting NATO airstrikes in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In March 1995, Captain Stewart reported to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 as an EA-6B Instructor and the Electronic Warfare Coordinator for the Aviation Development, Tactics, and Evaluation department. In June 1998, Major Stewart returned to Cherry Point, North Carolina, as the Electronic Warfare Department Head in VMAQ-2.
In February 1999, he deployed to Aviano Airbase, Italy, for Operation ALLIED FORCE, supporting NATO airstrikes in Serbia and Montenegro. Major Stewart accrued 87 strike flights in combat operations against defense forces of the Republics of Former Yugoslavia. In July 2001, Major Stewart reported to the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island as a student in the College of Naval Command and Staff. Major Stewart graduated with distinction in June 2002, earning a Masters of Science in National Security Studies.
From 2002 to 2004, Major Stewart served in the Aviation Department, Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps. As the Electronic Warfare Coordinator he worked issues involving EA-6B airframe sustainment and upgrades, and EA-6B operational deployments.
From July 2004 to June 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Stewart served as the Commanding Officer, Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. He deployed to Indonesia, Thailand, and the Republic of the Philippines, supporting Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief efforts.
In June 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Stewart reported to Headquarters U.S. European Command, Stuttgart, Germany. He directed contingency and long-range campaign plans in support of U.S, NATO, and partner nations. Colonel Stewart was promoted to his current rank in July 2009. Col Stewart reported to Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps as the director of the Aviation Manpower and Support branch.
His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with two gold stars), the Air Medal-Air Heroic (with gold star and Combat ‘V’), the Air Medal-Strike Flight (with numeral three), the Joint Services Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with gold star), and the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Colonel Stewart has flown over 2,500 mishap free flight hours in both the EA-6B and UC-12F aircraft.
