It is time to reinforce the need for basics. Many senior leaders, myself included, are concerned that, over time, we let personal accountability, compliance, and responsibility slip. We sometimes rely too much on technology to 'care for' and 'grow' our Airmen which shortchanges many AF traditions that are beneficial to the establishment and maintenance of standards, discipline, and service culture. Starting in October, we will reintegrate basic military activities, customs, and traditions to foster increased interaction among our Airmen.

Awards Boards develop confidence, instill professionalism, and allow Airmen to stand out from their peers. Roll Calls give an opportunity for leaders to disseminate information, set priorities, and bring order in a clear, organized manner. Airman's Time builds camaraderie through activities such as fitness, training, readiness, and professional development. Professional enhancement seminars give supervisors the tools necessary to establish and maintain standards, discipline, and attention to detail.

Although technology plays a critical role in communication, it is vital that we expect and conduct face-to-face interaction at all levels. Personal encounters allow us to emphasize accountability and build a foundation of integrity. In our digital world, we often substitute personal encounters for an email. Clicking forward on an email is easy ... so is clicking delete ... We need to get out from behind the desk to look each other 'in the eye.'

The breadth of our Command is immense -- in size as well as mission. Each unit is unique -- making a common set of standards difficult. My expectations, however, are universal. Look at your team, flight or branch, squadron or division, group or directorate, and find optimal means to reinvigorate basic unit activities, complete the mission, and hold ourselves and each other accountable.
