Base thrift store celebrates one year in new location

3 Jul 2012 | Staff Sgt. Stephenie Wade

Past the 375th Security Forces Squadron and across from the base "lemon lot," resides a store known as the Scott Air Force Base Thrift Store. A year ago this month, the store moved to its new location in Bldg. 700 on South Winters Drive because of the expansion of the Education Center.

According to Jamie Messer, thrift store manager, the store is jointly run by volunteers from the Scott Air Force Base Officers Spouses' and Enlisted Spouses' Clubs and considered a private organization on base.

"The profit from the items goes towards giving back to the community on and off-base with military scholarships and Airman Family Readiness Center's Hearts Apart program," said Messer.

The items sold are either donated items or from contracted consignment vendors.

"The vendors can sell up to 16 items a day according to their contract," she said.

In the past, individuals who were allowed to sell items as vendors had to be a relative of an active duty member on orders to Scott. The rules have recently been revised to allow civilians on G-6 orders and their family members to also sell items.

"To celebrate our one year anniversary at a new location, we are going to allow vendors to sell double the usual amount, so 32 items, throughout the month of July," said Susan Brown, volunteer and thrift store committee member.

The thrift store accepts items such as clothing, household goods, and dishware goods for donation. The store does not accept any items that are worn, dirty or broken.

"The store is open to anyone who can get on Scott AFB," said Brown. "People can support this organization by donating, consigning, buying or volunteering."

The thrift store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The store is currently closed for the holiday and will re-open July 9.
