An Air Force Reservist firefighter with the 940th Air Refueling Wing recently won the wing's prestigious 2006 Airman of the Year Award.

Senior Airman Andrew Murtagh with the 940th Civil Engineer Squadron says it feels good to be noticed for his efforts over the past year, but he knows that being a firefighter and in the Air Force Reserves requires both teamwork and dedication.

"It felt great to be recognized for my hard work, but I know that it wouldn't be possible without the help and support from the rest of my unit," said Airman Murtagh.

Airman Murtagh, who is a probationary firefighter for the Menlo Park Protection District, enjoys working as a firefighter for the Air Force Reserve and the civilian sector because of the daily challenges and camaraderie.

"Working in emergency services assures me that I never know what is going to happen next," said Airman Murtagh. "I also believe the people I work with are the best men and women who serve."

He also enjoys serving others and learning new firefighting and rescue techniques.

"My job allows me to help others and continually learn new ideas and methods of working," said Airman Murtagh. "Firefighting is a contingency based atmosphere, often we have to adapt and overcome obstacles with limited resources and in an expedient manner."

The Airman also enjoys the opportunity to showoff some of the units firefighting capabilities.

"At the annual wing picnic the fire department usually brings out a fire engine, and I like watching the joy on the faces of the children as we let them wear our gear, ring the bell, honk the horn, and flash the lights. It's a great reminder of how great my job is," said Airman Murtagh.
