U.S. Marines and Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force soldiers train side-by-side for the first time in Hokkaido, Japan, during bilateral exercise Northern Viper 17, Aug. 9-28, 2017. This exercise was the first iteration of its type in northern Japan. Northern Viper maintains and strengthens the United States’ influence in the region and the U.S.-Japan Alliance.
