William Pinckney is remembered!

A ceremony is held for the unveiling of William Pinckney's new headstone at the Beaufort National Cemetery Feb. 10. Pinckney was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during World War II. However, until today, his headstone did not reflect the Navy Cross insignia. Pinckney was one of four African American Sailors to recievethe Navy Cross, the nation's second highest award for valor, during WWII. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Parker R. Golz and Lance Cpl. Montford Point Legacy: Jack Baker

Jack Baker, a Marine from Toledo, Ohio, was recognized with a Congressional Gold Medal during the annual Montford Point Marine Day held at the Lejeune Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Aug. 23, 2024. The medal was authorized by Congress in 2011 to be awarded to all Montford Point Marines for their significant contributions to American history by being the first African American Marines, overcoming racial discrimination to serve their country during World War 2 and paving the way for future generations of Black Americans in the military. USNS Montford Point Takes On Legacy, Leads New Class of Navy Ships

United States Naval Ship Montford Point was christened by Jackie Bolden, wife of retired Marine Maj. Gen. Charles Bolden, the current administrator of NASA, in San Diego March 2. The ship was named after the Montford Point Marines, who were the first African American Marines to officially attend Marine recruit training in the the 1940s. Available in High Definition.
