More than 500 United States Marine Corps enlistees and their family and friends from across the state of Arizona converged in Phoenix for the 2017 annual Marine Corps Recruiting Station Phoenix pool function, March 4, 2017. The purpose of the function is to screen and physically test the Marine applicants, while at the same time give them a preview of what they may be able to expect once they ship off to U.S. Marine Corps boot camp. The applicants, from 13 recruiting substations located throughout Arizona, ran an initial strength test made up of pull-ups, crunches, and a one and a half mile run. They ate a Meal Ready to Eat (MRE) for lunch and had question and answer sessions with Marine Corps drill instructors. To complete the day the recruiting substations competed in a fitness relay, culminating what being a Marine is about – camaraderie, teamwork and unity. (U.S. Marine Corps multimedia by Staff Sgt. ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Maxine Russell has dedicated nearly 30 years to sending care packages to service members deployed around the world. What started as a gesture of support for troops turned into building a legacy for her deceased son. Since then, Maxine has sent more than 7,200 care packages, adopted military families for the holidays, and volunteers her time as a grief counselor to veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress, all in the name of her son Darren “White Rabbit” Russell. Marines, sailors and families with II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, participated in a “Praetorian Challenge” field meet aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 10, 2014. Participants were challenged to go back to their warrior roots by competing in events such as rock climbing, a 7-ton vehicle pull, pugil stick bouts and a tug-of-war challenge. The events helped the Marines build unit cohesion and increase readiness through friendly competition. At the conclusion of the meet, 2nd Intelligence Battalion was declared the winner.
