This short documentary captures the stories of two women, their careers, and their shared experience as women in the military facing and overcoming barriers. As each address the bias and harassment they’ve endured, we see how each woman has carved out a place for themselves - not as a female Marine, but as a Marine. The responsibilities of equal opportunity representatives and advisors as Marine leaders includes being a resource to help you change the climate within our culture, preventing toxic leadership and a hostile working environment utilizing Prohibited Activities and Conduct (PAC). Within the realm of Prohibited Activities and Conduct falls violations involving Sexual Harassment. Sexual Harassment covered under PAC is defined by “Knowing, reckless, or intentional conduct with a nexus to military service that Involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and deliberate or repeated offensive comments or gestures of a sexual nature when: Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of a person’s job, pay, or career.” Every Marine, Sailor and civilian is worthy of dignity and respect. For most Marines, the arrival of the equal opportunity representative (EOR) or equal opportunity advisor (EOA) into their workspace signifies one thing – spy on deck! The stigma that surrounds the resource of the EOR or EOA is one of having to fix and adjust the environment, from pictures and knick-knacks at your desk to stereotypical foul language. This simply isn’t the case. As Marines, we are expected to be professional at all times. As EORs and EOAs, their responsibilities as Marine leaders includes being a resource to help you change the climate within our culture, preventing toxic leadership and a hostile working environment utilizing Prohibited Activities and Conduct (PAC). Happy Women’s Equality Day! Women have come a long way since the days of Opha May Johnson. The advancement of proud women who have earned the title of Marine in our Corps has been monumental over the years. From only being able to hold administrative military occupational specialties and attend etiquette classes, to opening up combat positions with our brothers-in-arms.
