U.S. Marine Capt. Sean McCool visits the USN Commander Willie McCool Gawed Kalinga Village in the Philippines, named after his father, William C. McCool, for the first time, April 29. Gawed Development Foundation, a Philippine-based poverty alleviation and nation-building movement. McCool's grandmother, Atilana Rambayon, donated her land to the foundation that provided 21 homes to families in need. McCool, from Anacortes, Washington, is a combat engineer with Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, in the Philippines for Exercise Balikatan 2015. Balikatan is a annual interoperability exercise with the U.S. military and the Armed Forces f the Philippines.

U.S. Marines gather to learn traditional stick fighting from a sixth-degree black belt April 28 at Camp O'Donnell during exercise Balikatan 2015 as part of a martial arts exchange. Stick fighting is used to attack lightly-armed personnel at close quarters.

U.S. Marines with Detachment A, Marine Air Control Squadron 4, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, built a solar powered device made of old military parts to power an AN/TRN-47 Deployable Beacon-Transponder, which provides tactical air navigation services. The device was designed by GySgt. Michael Ott and was tested for the first time during Exercise Balikatan 2015. The system saved the Marines of the detachment hours of work, man power, and hundreds of gallons of generator fuel. Balikatan is an annual Philippines-U.S. military training exercise and humanitarian assistance engagement, which highlights the long standing partnership between both nations.

12th Marine Regiment combines skills with the Philippine 105mm howitzer April 26, during Exercise Balikatan 2015 at Crow Valley, Philippines. U.S. Air Force pararescuemen with 31st Rescue Squadron and members from the 505th Search and Rescue Group of the Philippine Air Force conducted a mass-casualty evacuation drill at Clark Air Base, Philippines, April 24, during exercise Balikatan 2015. The bilateral training event provided both rescue teams with a better understanding of how each other operates, and ensures mission accomplishment should they work side-by-side in the future. U.S. and Filipino Marines conduct a regimental aerial assault into Crow Valley, Philippines, during exercise Balikatan 2015, April 19. MV-22 Tiltrotor Ospreys flew in dropping off infantry men from 4th Marine Regiment along with their Filipino counterparts into the valley to start the field training exercise Combined Vigilance. The large scale exercise in Crow Valley is a fully integrated training exercise with the Filipino and U.S. Marines working shoulder to shoulder, honing their war fighting skills and learning from each other. Exercise Balikatan is a bilateral training exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U. S. military to increase interoperability.
