U.S. Marines and sailors with Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Southern Command are wrapping up their deployment to Central America, during which they conducted security cooperation training, engineering projects, and humanitarian assistance with their counterparts in several Central American and Caribbean nations. The Marines are preparing to redeploy to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, after successfully completing seven engineering projects across three countries and conducting humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations in Caribbean countries impacted by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Marines with Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Southern Command conducted their pre-deployment training program at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 4 - May 5, 2017. The task force, comprised of approximately 300 Marines from both active and reserve components, will deploy to Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras this summer to build upon security cooperation efforts and established relationships in the region.
