Marines train using Assault Amphibious Vehicles during Talisman Saber training exercise in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, Queensland, Australia. The Talisman Saber series of exercises is the principal Australian and United States Military Training activity focused on the planning and conduct of mid-intensity ‘high end’ war fighting. The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit is taking part in Talisman Saber while deployed on its regularly-scheduled patrol of the Indo-Asia-Pacifc region.

Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit explored the New South Wales, Australia-area during a liberty port June 29-July 2, 2017. The 31st MEU encouraged Marines to immerse themselves in Australian culture, to visit the iconic landmarks in the area and travel with the military sponsored tours. The liberty port was prior to the Talisman Saber 2017 exercises. Talisman Saber is a realistic exercise that brings service members closer and improves both nations' ability to work bilaterally and multilaterally, and prepares them to be poised to provide security regionally and globally. AUSTRALIAN ARMY BASE ROBERTSON BARRACKS, Darwin – Lt. Col. Brian Middleton, commanding officer of Marine Rotational Force Darwin, presented Australian Army Maj. Joel Domigan with the Air Medal with combat valor on May 26, 2017. Domigan was recognized for his heroic actions as an AH- 1 Cobra pilot with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, 3rd Marine Air Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, while in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
