A Tinian resident and Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, speak of their experiences before, during and after Typhoon Yutu during the U.S. Defense support of civil authorities relief efforts on Tinian, commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Nov.15, 2018. Businesses, government buildings, homes and schools were heavily damaged by Super Typhoon Yutu, which made a direct hit with devastating effect on Tinian Oct. 25 as the second strongest storm to ever hit U.S. soil. A time lapse video shows Marines and Sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Combat Logistics Battalion 31 assembling a U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency emergency shelter after Super Typhoon Yutu devastated Tinian, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Nov. 7, 2018. Yutu is the second strongest storm to ever hit U.S. soil. The 31st MEU and CLB-31 arrived Oct. 29-31 to lead the DOD’s relief efforts here, a multi-service contingent of military units addressing Tinian’s urgent needs. U.S. Marines with India Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines took part in Jeanne D' Arc 2017, a joint training exercise with French Special Forces, British Royal Marines, and Japanese soldiers on the island of Tinian. This exercise gave an opportunity for those participating to train together and work with partner nations while sharing tactics, strengthening coordination and communication, and increasing interoperability.

Valiant Shield is a U.S.-only, biennial field training exercise (FTX) with a focus on integration of joint training among U.S. forces in relation to current operational plans. This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land, and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.

Residents on Tinian and Saipan gathered information and submitted comments during public scoping meetings regarding proposed development of live-fire ranges and training areas on Tinian and Pagan islands in CNMI. The meetings, which concluded Friday, allowed government officials to provide information, answer questions and seek public input on the current preliminary alternatives proposed in the CNMI Joint Military Training Environmental Impact Statement and Overseas EIS.
