Nine years after witnessing the Boston Marathon bombings Pvt. Juancarlos Tapia graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on May 27, 2022.

Former Marine Sergeant John "Jack" Madden received the Purple Heart Medal on August 12th, 2020 near Boston, Massachusetts. Then LCpl Madden was shot in the arm while serving as the squad leader for India Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment during the Battle of Getlin's Corner on March 30th, 1967. Former Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps General Richard Neal served with Madden in Vietnam and was instrumental in getting him the medal he deserved.

August is Anti-Terrorism awareness month, dedicated to bringing awareness to the threat and effects of terrorism. The U.S. Marine Corps operates to defend networks, systems and the information environment against terrorism while building domestic and international support, potentially affecting adversarial audiences to create favorable conditions. Meet the Marines assigned to the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) as they prepare for Sail Boston 2017. Sail Boston is scheduled to occur June 17-22 at Boston Harbor showcasing the largest fleet of ships since 2000. The Marines and Sailors are participating in the event in order to showcase the strengths of America’s amphibious fighting force to civilians in Boston.

Marines who came to Boston aboard the USS Arlington take part in the Saint Patrick’s Day festivities were given the opportunity to give back. Marines aboard the USS Arlington volunteered six hours of their own time to the organization Cradles to Crayons. The organization’s main focus is to serve children in need from birth to the age of twelve within the community of Boston. The Marines spent their time at the community relations event packing boxes, folding and sorting clothes, sorting toys, and preparing clothing packages for children in the community.

Marines with Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Boston volunteered their time at The Greater Boston Food Bank in South Boston, March 17, 2015. After sorting a record-breaking 15,206 pounds of food, the Marines could leave the warehouse knowing they had provided 10,206 meals to people in need.

Marines with II Marine Expeditionary Force and U.S. Marine Forces Command from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Norfolk, Virginia, respectively, embarked on a 10-day mission to Boston aboard the USS Arlington (LPD-24) amphibious transport dock ship to showcase their amphibious capabilities. The Marines were able to share their knowledge to the public and anyone who came aboard the USS Arlington through static displays, tours and classes. The Marines also took part in a motivational physical training event while underway to Boston. The Marines took to the land, skies to storm the city of Boston. Various Marine units from around the country joined forces Monday at Boston Common to set up displays and showcase equipment used in current day operations. The city’s downtown park will play host helicopters, a CH-53E Super Stallion, an AH-1 Cobra, and UH-1Y Huey and also an MV-22 Osprey. The displays set up kicked off Marine Week Boston, a weeklong series of events showcasing the Corps’ culture, history, traditions and current missions with the citizens of Boston. “The city of Boston and the people that live here have a great opportunity. Most of them don’t get to see Marines on a regular basis,” said Lt. Col. Peter Conlan, the lead planner for Marine Week. A big hit for the crowd of Bostonians, was when the aircraft arrived at Boston Common, flying over the city. Maj. Paul Kopacz, the operations officer for Marine Tiltroter Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 22, 2nd Marine Air Wing, Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., said he hopes that Bostonians will be able to form their own opinions about the Osprey. The displays set up at the park covered a variety of vehicles, weapons systems and aircraft. Marines from Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, had crew-served weapons set up to show Bostonians what the unit uses when deployed to a combat zone. “Growing up as a kid, everyone has their Army men,” said Lance Cpl. Steven Beck, a mortarman with the company and a Springfield, Mo., native. “However, you never get to see it up close. This is our chance to show it up close.” Conlan added that he hoped the Marines would get a chance to learn something about the city of Boston. “It’s an opportunity to show off your town a little bit,” said the Methuen, Mass., native. “A lot of these guys [Marines] will really like Boston, especially this time of year.” For more information about the events in Marine Week Boston, go to facebook.com/MarineWeek or twitter.com/Marineweek.
