At the request of the National Interagency Fire center, 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, quickly trained and embarked on a month long mission to protect people, property and public lands against the Creekfire, and August Complex. Marines with 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, participate in a ceremony honoring the legacy of the French fourragere award aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Nov. 22, 2016. The French fourragere is a military award given to units as a whole for meritorious acts of conduct in action. The heroic acts of valor made the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments the only two units of the American Expeditionary Force to receive the fourragere. Marines display the award with a green and red braided rope with a spike on the end worn around the left shoulder of the service alpha uniform. On the fifth anniversary of the Great Tohoku Earthquake, MCIPAC Commanding General, Brig. Gen. Joaquin F. Malavet took time to reflect on the importance of the U.S-Japan friendship. A minute of silence at 2:46 honored those who were lost during the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and resulting 13-story high tsunami waves and nuclear disaster at Fukushima, as well as the U.S. and Japanese service members who participated in the massive recovery mission: Operation Tomodachi.

Marines and sailors with the 5th Marine Regiment honored Staff Sgt. Randolph Elder with the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously during a ceremony at the 5th Marines Memorial Garden, Aug. 16,. Elder was among the first African Americans to enlist in the Marine Corps after it was desegregated during 1941 by President Franklin Roosevelt. Colonel Jason Bohm, commanding officer, 5th Marines, and Larry Elder, son of Staff Sgt. Elder, speak to a military reporter about the event.

Patriot Guard Riders escorted the 5th Marine Regiment Operation Enduring Freedom Memorial to the Camp San Mateo Memorial Garden here, May 20, 2013.
