Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller, the most decorated Marine in American history, was born on this day, June 26, in 1898. Inspired by the Marines of Belleau Wood, Chesty knew from a young age that he would be part of the military. In his lifetime, he demonstrated impeccable leadership and complete devotion to his Marines. He received numerous awards, including five Navy Crosses and a Distinguished Service. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Martin Brandtner is laid to rest at The Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nev., Jan. 18, 2017. Lt. Gen. Brandtner is one of two Marines to be awarded two Navy Crosses for his actions during the Vietnam War.
