U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 cook a three-course meal during a food service evaluation designed for the Maj. Gen. William Pendleton Thompson Hill Award at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, December 8, 2017. MWSS-172 Marines competed to earn the title ‘Best Field Mess’ for the Asia-Pacific region. Established in 1985, the W.P.T Hill award was created to reward high quality food service by identifying the best mess halls and field messes throughout the Marine Corps and encouraging a commitment to excellence through competition. Homonai, from Medina, Ohio, is a future operations officer for Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st MAW. Sgt. Dennis Gomez-Cruz, from Olympia, Washington, is a tactical data system administrator for Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 18, 1st MAW. Cpl. Titus G. Powell, from Burnet ,Texas, is a flight equipment technician for Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265, 1st MAW. Sgt. Seth J. Eubanks, from Orange, Texas, is a communications chief for MAG-36, 1st MAW. Cpl. James H. McGinnis, from Bluffton, South Carolina, is a flight equipment technician with VMM-265, 1st MAW Staff Sgt. Kristy L. Weber, from Hickory, North Carolina, is an administrative chief for MTACS-18, 1st MAW.

Fighting and winning our nation’s battles since July 7, 1941, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the Aviation Combat Element of III Marine Expeditionary Force, provides combat ready, task organized forces capable of conducting aviation operations across all six functions of Marine Aviation in naval and expeditionary environments, and commands and controls aviation forces through the Tactical Air Command Center in order to contribute to the accomplishment of our nation's security objectives as required by standing operational plans in the Pacific Command's area of responsibility, engagement operations in support of Marine Forces Pacific, overseas contingency operations, and other operations as directed. For the first time, more than 2,000 U.S. Marines joined with approximately 1,500 service members with the Japan Self-Defense Force to support the first iteration of Exercise Northern Viper 2017, at Misawa Air Base and the island of Hokkaido, Japan, August 10-28, 2017. Northern Viper, an annual joint contingency exercise, tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the JSDF and U.S. Marine Corps forces to work together across a variety of areas including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This exercise enhances and improves interoperability at the tactical level between the Marines and JSDF to keep the forces formidable and adaptive. NV17 showcases a highly-capable, forward-deployed U.S. military presence positioned with their Japanese partners to directly support the security of the Indo-Asia- Pacific region.
