Joint Civilian Orientation Conference members tour Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, Nov. 4, 2019. The JCOC is the Department of Defense’s oldest and most prestigious public liaison program. Established in 1948, it is the only Secretary of Defense-sponsored outreach program that enables American business and community leaders to have a full immersive experience with their military. The Marine Corps portion of the JCOC consists of a tour of MCB Quantico and its various facilities, highlighting Marine Corps history, leaders, tactical assets and cultural impact on American society. Celebrating 100 Years of Marine Corps Air Facility

Lt. Col. Daniel Murphy, commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Facility (MCAF) Quantico, and Annette Amerman, branch head and historian of Marine Corps History Division at Quantico, speak of MCAF's significance with Marine Corps aviation since its establishment in 1919. Known as "the cradle of Marine aviation," MCAF was a prime location to test aircraft capabilities, beginning with air balloon spotting, smoke screens, dive bombing and torpedo bombing, and much more. It is also the location of Marine Helicopter Squadron 1, better known as HMX-1 or the presidential squadron, where they still test vertical envelopment for aircraft while directly supporting the president of the United States.

Quantico CO Visits MLK Memorial, Leaves Base a Message

Marine Col. William Bentley, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Base Quantico, visited the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Memorial in the District of Columbia earlier this week and recorded himself as he spoke about MLK during his observance. Thursday, Jan. 17, the Memorial Chapel aboard base is hosting a commemorative observance of MLK, where Dr. Clifford Stanley, a retired major general, will speak as the guest speaker.
